Bridge Carols, the new project from Portland, OR friends Laura Gibson and Ethan Rose, takes the listener to a place that exists between the notes and behind the words of modern music. It’s music that feels intimately familiar, timeless; at its heart, quite natural and human.

Bridge Carols began as a conversation of mutual appreciation and curiosity - a shared desire to challenge old ways of working. Ethan had mostly distanced his music from words, while Laura had often felt bound by them.

They began work on Bridge Carols by experimenting with different methods of collaboration. Inspired by Laura's voice, Ethan began building soundscapes, while Laura looked through piles of notebooks, coming across old phrases that never found home in verses or rhymes. They began recording Laura singing these unused writings.

As the project developed, Laura began improvising lyrics and wordless vocalizations, stream of consciousness singing that tumbled out of her in long trailing waves. They recorded in the basement, the forest, and the field - each session having its own unique mood as Laura reflected from subject to subject.

Ethan then took the recorded words and vocalizations from these sessions - cutting them into bits and pieces - rearranging and juxtaposing them against each other to stretch them into new musical poems. These reconstructed lyrical fragments maintained the tone of Laura's original improvisations while allowing new themes and meanings to emerge. With these vocal collages in place, Ethan would reshape tones and sounds around Laura's words. The resulting pieces developed into songs. The songs developed into Bridge Carols, a record of deep atmosphere and an almost sublingual resonance.

Holocene Music is proud to present the new album from acclaimed ambient electronic experimentalist Ethan Rose. This is Ethan’s third full-length, following on the 2006 release Ceiling Songs and the 2007 release, Spinning Pieces. Ethan’s music was also featured in Gus Van Sant’s latest film, Paranoid Park. Ethan explains Oaks as follows:

“Over the past year I’ve been coming out to the Oaks Park Roller Rink to play and record the Wurlitzer Theater Organ that is located there. The organ dates from the 1920s and was originally housed in the Broadway Theater in downtown Portland where it was used to accompany silent films. It is currently played and maintained by Keith Fortune who has been involved with the organ and the rink for the past fifteen years. I’ve had the privilege of assisting Keith with organ repairs, which has deepened my appreciation of the instrument. Musically speaking, my primary interest with this organ has been to bring its antiquated sounds into a modern context, essentially treating it with the same sense of sonic reinterpretation that I have brought to my previous works.”

The Shaky Hands’ self-titled debut, released in 2007, was a fantastic snapshot of the energetic young band discovering itself. Nick Delffs’ vibrato-infused, homespun vocals and bobbing acoustic guitar strums complement Colin Anderson’s organic, driving percussion while Jeff Lehman’s own guitar rockouts remind listeners that The Shaky Hands were, after all, a rock band. The album approximates the irresistibly frenetic Shaky Hands live experience, which finds frontman Nick Delffs stomping and galloping across the stage, occasionally running directly into bassist Mayhaw Hoons’ wildly swinging curly red hair. But The Shaky Hands were not content with being everyone’s favorite good vibe summertime rockers. The now-quintent (Nick’s brother, multi-instrumentalist Nathan Delffs, officially joined the band shortly after the full-length was recorded) went swiftly back into the studio to record Lunglight, a record that proves them to be evolving with remarkable speed. Where the Hands’ debut was jangly and upbeat, prompting visions of long summer days spent lounging on the front porch, Lunglight lives in a slightly darker space. Tracks like “Neighbors” and “Love All Of” add a sheen of Doors’ psychedelia to The Shaky Hands’ early Talking Heads-influenced sound, with Nick Delffs looking increasingly inward for lyrical inspiration. On “World Gone Mad,” perhaps the darkest and most driving Shaky Hands song recorded to date, Delffs sings “See it coming/ In his eyes/ You better stay where/ You can hide,” and feedback flies like shrapnel around the verse. For a second there, The Shaky Hands get scary.

But that’s not to say that Lunglight is a downer. Brighter numbers like “Air Better Come” and “Settle On” keep The Shaky Hands’ trademark head-bobbing, multi-rhythmic rock intact, and even in their darkest moments there is a reluctant optimism in Delffs’ lyrics and the band’s instrumentation. To the contrary, Lunglight’s complexity is its biggest strength. In a world of throwaway pop, this quintet has built itself from the ground up, naturally and beautifully. It’s just that instead of being the quintessential summertime rock band, the new Shaky Hands are a band for all seasons.

Lunglight is a split release between Portland-based labels Kill Rock Stars and Holocene Music.

This lovingly packaged new 7″ from San Francisco’s Sholi contains two cover songs, “Hejrat” by Iranian pop-diva Googoosh, and “Sprout and the Bean” by Joanna Newsom. Sholi interprets both, with lead singer Payam Bavafa singing in Farsi on the Googoosh track.

Googoosh was the most celebrated pop-singer of Iran during the 1970’s before the Islamic Revolution. After the revolution, most pop-music was banned from the country and she stopped singing entirely. Iranians fled to the United States and Europe, and Googoosh’s voice resonated as the soundtrack for their former lives in Iran before everything changed. This 7″ connects these exiled Iranian’s search for cultural identity and understanding with the broader existential themes embedded in Joanna Newsom’s deeply moving song, “The Sprout and the Bean.”

The music itself is sprawling and complex, with intricate, powerful drumming, interweaving guitar arpeggios, beautiful keyboard melodies, and virtuosic vocals. Conceptually and and on a pure sonic level, this is a very special piece of music.

Holocene Music is beyond stoked to present the debut full-length from Portland, Oregon jangly pop wunderkinds The Shaky Hands. Sliding bouncy go-go beats under shambling guitars and reedy, swooning vocals, Shaky Hands make the kind of catchy, soulful indie rock that’s tailor-made for brokedown car stereos and river-rat boomboxes. Their debut album’s 13 tracks glow with a sloppily romantic warmth that’s equal parts summer sunshine and candlelit mellow, pre-party buzz and scruffy day-after fuzziness. The result is a fully formed and confident debut; a big-hearted, starry-eyed bear hug of a record, full of youthful energy and tumbling vigor, just waiting to back new adventures and comfort old friends.

The Shaky Hands formed in Portland in the fall of 2003. They began as a three piece with Nick Delffs (also of Castanets) playing guitar and singing, Colin Anderson playing drums and Paul Culp on bass. That year was spent performing in basements and living rooms. Following Culp’s departure in 2004, Mayhaw Hoons and his hair joined the band, soon followed by second guitarist Jeff Lehman. Around this time Nick and Colin traveled to Bonny Doon, California and recorded a self-titled EP with Nick’s brother Nathan, which was subsequently self-released on CD-R. In 2006 Nick, Colin, Mayhaw and Jeff recorded this (amazing) debut full-length at Sidecar Studios in Portland, before bringing on Nathan as an official member that spring. Now five strong with Nathan on pedal steel and percussion, The Shaky Hands are a visceral, life-affirming live experience that will totally make you hug the person standing next to you.

Holocene Music is honored to present the debut release from Portland, Oregon singer and songwriter Alela Diane. Hailing from the deep woods and winding rivers of Northern California Gold Rush town Nevada City, Alela grew up singing songs with her parents (both musicians), and performing in the school choir. During a stay in San Francisco in 2003, she began teaching herself guitar and writing her first songs, blending tense, trance-like arpeggios, with warm, thick vocals and meditative lyrics about family and nature.

Written in response to a loss of home and familiarity, The Pirate’s Gospel is a powerful document of personal reevaluation and renewal set against the backdrop of generations past and future, mothers and fathers, life, death, and birth. The songs were composed during a trip to Europe and recorded in her father’s studio in Nevada City. Originally available only in hand-stitched limited runs, this pressing marks the first time The Pirate’s Gospel has been made available outside of Alela’s immediate circle of friends and fans.

Swan Island is an all-female dance-metal crew founded in Portland, OR in March of 2004. Clearly situated within the grand tradition of Pacific Northwest feminist rock (Sleater-Kinney, The Gossip), Swan Island boldly encompasses Heart’s heart, Sabbath’s chug, and The Au Pairs’ political disco. The Centre Will Hold captures this unique fusion with the kind of crackling, raw energy that’s made their live shows legendary, resulting in a confident opening statement with soul and style to spare.

Holocene Music is proud to announce its debut release. Teaming Portland indie rock with the city’s finest electronic producers, It’s Importland To Me To Be One Step Further Than One Step Beyond: Holocene Remix Compilation Volume 1 presents a snapshot of a thriving creative scene at a time when these seemingly disparate camps have begun meshing into one.

Holocene commissioned a unique collaboration in which a selection of the city’s most talented electronic musicians were asked to reinterpret the music of their favorite Portland bands. The result is a post-millennial blend of electropunk, indie rock, and outsider folk, digitally spliced and mutated to form a cohesive album of genre-screwed electronic music.

Despite the project’s collaborative nature, It's Importland’s end result is an album that works best when listened from start to finish. For although these are remixes, each track emerges as a song unto itself. Beginning with Talkdemonic’s inspiring, percussive take on Menomena, the album warms into Kittenz’ squelched-out and funky Blitzen Trapper remix, before dropping us straight onto the dancefloor with Strategy’s sparkling tech-house reworking of The Blow. From there the album continues to gather steam, peaking with Solenoid’s masterful cyborgian nightmare Point Line Plane remix, before easing us back onto the floor with Copy and Toothfairy’s electropop versions of The Kingdom and Bobby Birdman, and ending on a mellow note with psychedelic adaptations of Thanksgiving by World (featuring members of Jackie-O Motherfucker) and The Plants by Strategy (aka Paul Dickow of Nudge).
